As the summer approaches and we’re basking in the good weather it’s a time when many of us start planning a hotel break away. With no sign of the recession easing and with increased pressure on hotels there is fantastic value available for those who are looking to get away for a few days.
Currently there is excess capacity in the hotel sector of between 12,000 and 15,000 rooms. This was brought about by the construction of an additional of 27,000 new hotel bedrooms between 1999 and 2008, bringing the total hotel bedroom capacity of the sector to 60,000. John Power of the Irish Hotel Federation has said the current hotel occupancy rate was at its lowest level in 30 years at 55%. Average room rates have also fallen by over 20% in the past 18 months in part due to very low pricing by hotels owned or supported by banks.
Typically hotel rates would increase at this time of the year but this hasn’t been the case and in late May many hotels are still selling rooms from as little as €49 per night. If occupancy rates don’t increase its likely rates will fall further as hotels come under increasing pressure.
